Eye disease
Cataract
This is a disease in which the crystalline lens, which functions as a focusing lens, becomes cloudy.
First symptom
-
Feeling glare outdoors
-
Can't see people's faces against the light
-
The visibility of reflected objects becomes worse
This is a symptom caused by clouding of the crystalline lens, which causes light to be reflected diffusely, making it difficult to see. It can be treated with surgery.
Cataract surgery
Cataracts cannot be completely cured by intravenous drip alone, but require surgery. At Hanamaki Chuo Ophthalmology, all surgeries are performed by the director, Dr. Kazuhiro Takahashi. In addition to regular cataract surgery, we also offer multifocal intraocular lenses, multifocal astigmatism-correcting intraocular lenses, and astigmatism-correcting intraocular lenses. We have introduced advanced medical care and a wide range of technologies.
FAQ
Q.
Isn't it painful?
A.
Anesthesia is administered using eye drops rather than injections. You will rarely feel any pain during the surgery.
Q.
How long does it take?
A.
The surgery time is approximately 10 minutes, excluding the pre-surgical examination and examination time. However, it varies depending on the difficulty of the case.
Q.
Hospitalized?
A.
Patients choose whether or not to be admitted to the hospital. We provide hospitalization for those who come from far away or those who are anxious about returning home. (1 night)
Q.
What should I be careful about in my daily life after surgery?
A.
You can basically live your normal life, but you will not be able to drive a car for 2 to 3 days after surgery. Please follow your doctor's instructions regarding drinking and smoking.
Q.
Will I need to go to the hospital after surgery?
A.
You will need to visit the hospital for 3 days, on the day of surgery, the next day, and the day after.
Glaucoma
This is a disease in which the pressure in the eyeballs becomes abnormally high. The optic nerve is damaged and visual field becomes narrowed.
Glaucoma symptoms
-
Little or no subjective symptoms
-
Vision gradually becomes narrower (risk of blindness)
-
In acute cases, eye pain, headache, and nausea
Once the optic nerve is damaged, it will not return to its original state. The goal is to stop the progress. Get regular eye exams even if you have no symptoms.
Glaucoma test
Diagnosis is made through intraocular pressure tests, fundus tests, visual field tests, etc.
Generally, glaucoma has few symptoms, and the disease often progresses without you even realizing it, so you should have a regular checkup once a year.
Intraocular pressure test
This is a test that measures intraocular pressure by applying a measuring device or air to the surface of the eye.
Fundus examination
The optic disc will be observed to check the condition of the optic nerve.
Visual field test
Progress is determined based on the presence or absence and size of visual field defects.
Glaucoma treatment
The effective treatment for glaucoma is to control intraocular pressure to a low level in order to halt the progression of the disease. Drug therapy and surgery are common, but even if the intraocular pressure is lowered after surgery, the effect may not be maintained and surgery may be necessary.
Drug therapy
Start with eye drops to lower intraocular pressure. If eye drops alone are not sufficiently effective, oral medications may also be used.
Precautions when using eye drops
-
Be sure to follow the frequency and amount.
-
After applying the eye drops, press the inner corner of the eye lightly.
-
When applying two or more eye drops, leave an interval of about 5 minutes.
Glaucoma surgery
There are methods such as making an incision in the area that is blocking the flow of aqueous humor and creating a channel to make it flow more easily, and methods that suppress the production of aqueous humor in the ciliary body.
Points to note in daily life
-
A healthy and regular life
-
Prescribed eye drops and oral medications may cause side effects. If you experience any unusual symptoms all over your body, please consult us immediately.
Diabetic retinopathy
Damage to the retinal tissue caused by diabetes that causes vision loss.
Risk of onset
-
Blood sugar level is 200 or higher (HbA1c is 7.0 or higher)
-
HbA1c has exceeded the standard value for more than 5 years
-
People receiving treatment for diabetes
People who have been diagnosed with diabetes or who suspect they have it are also at risk. If treated early, the progression of the disease can be suppressed. Please consult with us once.
Testing for diabetic retinopathy
A dilated pupil test (fundus examination) will be performed to more accurately understand the condition of the back of the eye. Exposure to light causes the pupils to become smaller, so to prevent this, mydriatic drops are administered. After the test, you will feel dazzled and have difficulty seeing for a certain period of time until the drug's effects wear off.
When damage occurs to the retinal tissue, it is diagnosed as simple diabetic retinopathy.
If blood sugar can be controlled medically in the early stages, there is a high possibility that it can be cured.
There are almost no symptoms, so be sure to have your eyes examined.
Treatment for diabetic retinopathy
Those with early symptoms
Vascular disorders such as capillary clogging and bleeding are suppressed through medical blood sugar control.
Those whose illness is progressing
If fundus hemorrhage has developed: Treatment will be performed using a laser to prevent the formation of new blood vessels.
If macular edema occurs: Consider intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) antibody.
